writing process

hello, everyone! Sorry I haven’t been more active; college is getting busier, and I’m about to graduate in May.

What?!

Side note: It’s my four year anniversary with WordPress! I can’t believe it! Thanks for wandering with me (if you read my posts).

Although I don’t have time to write something too deep, I thought I’d share some tips for a smooth writing process.

  1. Don’t write in a distracting environment.
Okay–if you must, that’s fine. But if you can choose between a dim, empty room or the back porch where sun shines and your neighbors are mowing the lawn, go for the dim room.
  2. Have source material. The difference between drifting into a writing time where I have no goals versus knowing what I’m going to do is like night and day.
You don’t have to spend ten minutes prepping material before you write (though that’s nice), but even thinking about the scene you’re writing, or keeping story chronology in mind, helps when you sit down to write. Direction matters.
  3. Wear headphones, even if you’re not listening to music. This gets me in “writing mode.” Turning on some lofi or atmospheric music helps, too–I have playlists for every character, so I usually choose based on the character I’m writing or the mood for the scene.

Sometimes music doesn’t work, and that’s okay too. As long as you have certain “writing only” habits, it can push your mind towards realizing, “I’m supposed to write now!”
  4. Visualize. Finally, I can’t begin to explain how great it is to visualize your work. Whether you’re writing about vaccines or fantasy monsters, have an image in your head, or maybe a Pin on another tab.

There we go for now! What is your writing process? Any habits you love?

Until next time,

  1. I love headphones, they make me feel I am in another world!
